1688 (1688.com) is Alibaba Group’s wholesale marketplace for China’s domestic market: factory prices, minimum order quantities (MOQ) from 2–100 pieces, Chinese language only and Chinese payment systems only. You cannot pay it from Uzbekistan directly, so orders go through an agent. What is 1688, and how is it different from Taobao and Pinduoduo?

1688 is “the inside of Alibaba”. Alibaba.com serves foreign buyers in English and dollars; 1688 serves Chinese shops and resellers: the same factories, but prices 20–40% lower because there is no export markup and no middleman.

Bottom line: order one sample on Taobao, order the lot on 1688. Pinduoduo is only for cheap goods where quality matters little.

Account and app: what do you need?

You do not need an account to browse — 1688.com opens in a browser and search works. Placing an order, however, requires an account tied to a Chinese phone number, Alipay and often Chinese identity verification — which is why a buyer in Uzbekistan normally orders through an agent’s account.

Practical tips:

  • App. Install “1688” (阿里巴巴) for Android/iOS; image search and translation are more convenient in the app.
  • Translation. Turn on automatic page translation in Chrome; the camera mode in Yandex or Google Translate reads text inside the app. Since 2025 the 1688 app has an English interface, but product descriptions are still in Chinese.

How to search for products on 1688

  1. Translate the keyword into Chinese. “Phone case” → 手机壳, “women’s bag” → 女包, “LED lamp” → LED灯. Try several synonyms — the results differ dramatically.
  2. Search by image. The camera icon in the app (拍照搜索) takes a picture from Taobao, Instagram or Uzum and finds the factories that make that product.
  3. Apply filters. 实力商家 (strong seller), 48小时发货 (ships within 48 hours), 一件代发 (ships from 1 piece), 7天无理由退换 (7-day returns).
  4. Check the seller. Years on the platform (more than 5 is good), 回头率 (repeat-purchase rate, above 30% is good), the 工厂 badge (the factory itself) and the number of reviews.
  5. Read the price tiers. Usually three prices: for example, 2–99 pcs — 8.5 yuan, 100–999 — 7.8, 1,000+ — 7.2. The lowest price shown in the listing is for the largest lot.
  6. Note the size and colour. 规格 (specification) and 颜色 (colour) in the listing — these are the exact words used in the order.

How GSR Logistics buys for you

Ask the seller to write the GS code on every carton before dispatch (in Chinese: 发货前请写上GS编码/唛头). Inside China the goods take 2–5 days.
  6. Receiving, inspection, photo report. At the warehouse we weigh, measure, open and count every box; the photo report lands in your Telegram. Truck cargo is charged by volume. The density of the shipment picks the rate: density = weight (kg) ÷ volume (m³). Light cargo starts at $110 per m³ (up to 100 kg/m³) and the rate climbs as the load gets denser — the top volumetric band starts at 701 kg/m³ and costs $320 per m³; at 1,000 kg/m³ and above the price switches to $0.55 per kg instead. The minimum billable volume is 0.1 m³. That is why the same 40 kg costs $32 in 0.2 m³ but 0.5 × $110 = $55 in a loosely packed 0.5 m³ carton (density 80 kg/m³) — tight packing saves money directly.

Customs is separate. 300 identical items are a commercial lot: it is cleared in the name of a legal entity or a sole proprietor, duty is paid by HS code plus 12% VAT, and a customs declaration (GTD) is issued — only then can the goods be sold legally on Uzum or in a shop. A small order for personal use falls under the courier allowance of $200 per month; the excess is charged at 30% (minimum $3/kg), and from January 1, 2027 at 20% (minimum $2/kg). Taobao and Pinduoduo: what is different?

Taobao is the retail market: goods from the same factories as 1688, but by the piece and at a higher price. It suits samples, small orders (5–20 pcs) and rare items. Seller chat (旺旺) works the same way as on 1688; delivery inside China is mostly free. Some shops accept a foreign Visa card, but the delivery address still has to be in China — that is, the receiving address.

Pinduoduo has the lowest retail prices, often apparently below 1688. But the sellers are small, quality varies from lot to lot, returns are difficult, and goods that do not match the picture are common. It works for cheap small items (stationery, accessories, household goods); for a private label or a marketplace, 1688 is more reliable.

Common mistakes

  1. Looking at the lowest price without the MOQ. The 7.2 yuan in the listing is for 1,000 pieces; 50 pieces will cost 8.5 each.
  2. Trusting the picture. Ordering “like the photo” without reading the 规格 (specification) column — and receiving a different size, or packs of 10 instead of single units.
  3. Not vetting the seller. A seller with 1 year on the platform and a 10% repeat rate is risky even when cheap. Look for the 实力商家 and 工厂 badges.
  4. Entering your own address. 1688 does not deliver to Uzbekistan; the address is the receiving point your manager gives you, plus your GS code. The seller must write the GS code on every carton before dispatch: without it there is no way to tell whose cartons they are.
  5. Planning battery goods by air. Power banks, wireless earbuds, electronic toys — truck only. Plan the timeline accordingly.
  6. Goods with brand logos. Copies of Nike, Apple or Disney are seized at customs with no compensation. Ask for the unbranded (无标) version.
  7. A big lot without a sample. The first time, take 20–50 pieces rather than 1,000 — air brings them in 7 days and you see the quality yourself.
  8. Paying outside the platform. If the seller offers “cheaper via WeChat”, decline: you lose the platform’s protection.
  9. Ignoring the yuan rate. An agent’s “no commission” offer often hides a 5–8% markup in the exchange rate. Ask for the rate and its date on the quote.

During Chinese New Year (late January to mid-February) and Golden Week (October 1–7) sellers do not ship — place orders 3–4 weeks ahead.

Manager’s tip. Before sending a link, check 起批量 (minimum order) and 发货地 (shipping city) on the seller’s page. From a seller near Yiwu or Guangzhou the goods reach the warehouse in 1–2 days; from the northern provinces in 5–7. That is the difference between catching the next departure and waiting for the one after.
